The Faculty of Sciences performs research in the areas Life & Health, Networked World, Fundamentals of Science, and Energy & Sustainability. More than 1700 students participates in mono- and interdisciplinary bachelor and master courses. The staff is hosted in the departments of Physics, Chemistry & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Sciences. The Business, Web and Media group at the VU University Amsterdam is looking for an enthusiastic Postdoc for a 2 year full time position on the project “Creation of food specific ontologies for focused text mining and knowledge management studies” funded by the Netherlands eScience Center (NWO).Today’s life science research generates a vast amount of data, available in public and proprietary databases. In order to efficiently capitalize on these data, dedicated vocabularies and algorithms are necessary for annotating, searching, filtering and integrating data from various sources. Although a number of generic tools for knowledge discovery and knowledge management exist, their application in life science areas and in particular food research is limited. One reason is the absence of high quality vocabularies for the food domain – expressed as ontologies in languages such as RDFS and OWL. -We look for a talented and motivated candidate with a PhD in Computer Science, Information Science or Artificial Intelligence. -We are particularly looking for a candidate who is inspired by developing advanced information technology for applications in the practical world of food and has genuine interest in addressing real-world problems, in particular in the domain of food science. -The candidate must have good ability to write and read English.
