This scholarship has been set up to provide financial support and an opportunity to gain work experience at the District Council to tertiary students from the Horowhenua District who have or are commencing a University course of study in a prescribed field related to working in a District Council. It also provides for paid employment post graduation under some circumstances.Two Scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, are awarded annually by Horowhenua District Council.As part of the Scholarship entitlement Horowhenua District Council will offer the recipient up to 10 weeks per year paid work experience at Council during the school holidays. If a person receives the Scholarships for two or more years, after graduation the recipient will be bonded back to employment with the Horowhenua District Council for a period of time equivalent to half of the time which they received the scholarship for, eg if a Scholarship was paid for a period of four years, the recipient will contract to work for Council for a minimum of two years.If the recipient is unable to carry on with study at any stage in the course of the year, a percentage of the grant will be paid back to Horowhenua District Council, eg the $2,500 is divided up over four terms, if the recipient completes only the first term they will need to pay back three quarters of the Scholarship. The Scholarship amount of $2,500 will be paid as a lump sum to the successful recipient/s on 1st April 2013.

If you can answer yes to the questions below, you may be eligible to apply for a Horowhenua District Council Tertiary Education Scholarship. -Are you a Year 13 student currently studying at a secondary school in the Horowhenua region OR have you previously studied at a Horowhenua secondary school and are now in your first or second year of tertiary study -Are you planning to study or currently studying a qualification in a Council relevant area -Would you like a guaranteed job at the end of your studies plus ten weeks of paid employment during your holiday breaks -The Scholarships are awarded annually. Recipients may re-apply for the scholarships each year during the course of their studies -The Scholarship amount of $2,500 is only to be used for assistance towards studying, eg fees, stationery, resources etc., of the nominated course of study the recipient has chosen.
