 Neurotransmission in chemical synapses relies on the fast fusion of synaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane, liberating the enclosed neurotransmitters. The three SNARE-proteins synaptobrevin-2, syntaxin-1 and SNAP-25 are at the core of the release machinery and these proteins suffice to fuse membranes when reconstituted in vesicles in vitro. Changed expression levels of the SNAREs are correlated to human disease, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and schizophrenia.
