The foundation was established to commemorate the life and work of the late Barbara Wood MBE, the South Pacific Area Vice-President of the Associated Country Women of the World, from 1975-77. Mrs Wood, who died tragically in the Mt Erebus air disaster, was also Deputy World President of the same organisation between 1977-1979.The Foundation offers assistance to provide training opportunities for students in NZ and the Pacific Islands in home-making, leadership, education and all aspects of rural development and community work.

The scholarships are available to tertiary students who were born in the South Pacific region. Students wishing to study in New Zealand or anywhere in the South Pacific are eligible for funds.
