Braunschweig International Graduate School of Metrology is inviting applications for PhD Research position from Physicist or Engineer (German “Diploma” or Master). The post is offered within the scope of a flagship project “realization of the ampere according to the new definition” (RF-SET part). Position is available is from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2016 (3 years). Women applicants and disabled persons will be given priority. GRE and English language proficiency is required. Application closing date is 22 November 2013.. Our profile: Our Working Group is dealing with examinations of metallic and superconducting circuits with mesoscopic tunnel junctions and has many years of experience in relevant areas of physics and technology. The functioning of the circuits is based on classical and quantum-mechanical dynamic properties of the Josephson junctions and the single-electron tunneling effects. Our research activities are focused on the detection and controllable manipulation of single charge quanta and flux quanta as well as their interaction with single photons in the electromagnetic environment. Applications in metrology and quantum electronics are envisaged. The experimental equipment available includes a modern thin-film fabrication line in the Clean Room Center and a low-temperature measurement system on the basis of a He3/He4 dilution refrigerator. Your tasks: As a member of a research team you will be working on the development and optimization of ultra-fast (broadband) charge detectors on the basis of metallic high-frequency single-electron transistors (rf-SET) for an error correction in GaAs pump circuits. You will be involved in our research process and deal with individual steps, such as the defining and solving of physical tasks, test sample design and fabrication (including continuous process optimization), and you will participate in the low-temperature measurements of the test samples which you have prepared. Your profile will be completed by presenting your results in spoken and written form on your own responsibility. Disabled persons will be given priority if they have the same occupational aptitude. PTB promotes the professional equality of women and men and is thus especially interested in applications from women.. This position is open for pursuing PhD research program at Braunschweig International Graduate School of Metrology in Germany.
