Postdoctoral Fellowship in Atmospheric Sciences at INPE, Brazil

There is a post-doctoral vacancy with scholarship from FAPESP available at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The candidate must propose/develop a thunderstorm tracking system based on lightning data available from lightning location systems (LLS), taking into account aspects related to the performance variation of these systems. The system may include tools to mitigate possible effects of the climatic changes on the lightning activity, giving realtime or climatological information about the thunderstorms that are occurring. The work is part of the wide project, which aims to detect signs of climate change in the incidence and characteristics of lightning recorded in Brazil during the last decade, as well as to improve current observation techniques in the State of Sao Paulo, to improve the monitoring of such variability in the future.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Geosciences, with reasonable knowledge in Atmospheric Sciences/Atmospheric Electricity and good ground on lightning detection systems. Experience in physics of lightning, LLS data, Geographic Information Systems, and on detection efficiency models is desirable. It is also desirable knowledge of language for scientific programming (Matlab, IDL, etc.).
