ZEF University of Bonn is offering  Germany PhD Fellowship on aforestation for rehabilitation of degraded land in Sudano-Sahelian zone of northern Benin within the framework of WASCAL. The fellowship covers the stipend and research funds. The duration of the fellowship period is 3 years. Applicant must have a Master’s degree in the field of forestry and agroforestry or soil science. During fieldwork applicants will be employed at Tanguiéta, Benin and for data analysis and thesis write-up in Bonn, Germany. Applicant must have a good understanding of English and French language. Application should be e-mailed by January 15, 2014.. ZEF is looking for a candidate to conduct a Ph.D. study on aforestation within the framework of West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL; https://icg4wascal.icg.kfa-juelich.de/). The study will focus on silvicultural aspects of establishing tree plantations on marginal, nutrient-depleted and eroded soil. The data from field trials should be used for setting up a process-based model for further simulation analyses. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to collaborate with colleagues from other WASCAL studies on plant growth and nutrient cycling.. Duration: Elaborating a full research proposal and work plan at ZEF is expected in March/April 2014 to proceed with the field research in May 2014. Participation in ZEF Doctoral courses in October 2014 will be required. The duration of the scholarship period is 3 years.
