Center for Development Research, University of Bonn is offering three years PhD scholarship for research on analyzing the dynamics of macronutrient cycles under the impact of climate change and land use in West Africa’s Sudan Savanna. During this time, the doctoral student will be based at ZEF in Bonn whilst the field work is to be conducted during two periods in the North of Benin, West Africa. The scholarship will cover living, as well as operations (research) and travel costs. Applications should be submitted by January 15, 2014.. Climate change is coined as one of the main challenges for the future to the Sudano West Africa farming population. This region therefore is facing an urgent need to develop effective adaptation (and mitigation) measures. The West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) was designed to take up this challenge being now a large-scale, research-focused program to enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems to climate change. This scholarship is a part of WASCAL.. Scholarship is available for pursuing PhD research program at ZEF University of Bonn in Germany.

Who can apply to this scholarship? – Master or Diploma degree in agronomy, plant nutrition or plant physiology or related field;
· profound knowledge on nutrient cycling, climate change impact;
· proven experience in planning, designing and implementing field work and analyzing the data;
· ability to work self

· Proven experience in dealing with deadlines and reporting;
· willingness to closely cooperate with colleagues from other work packages of WASCAL and with local stakeholders (inter

· good knowledge of the French and English languages;

Duration: WASCAL/ZEF offers a three-year scholarship as a doctoral student. During this time, the doctoral student will be based at ZEF in Bonn whilst the field work is to be conducted during two periods in the North of Benin, West Africa. The successful applicant will develop first a research proposal until February 2014. For data collection, 10-14 months field work in Northern Benin (Tanguieta) should be planned during the most appropriate period of the year. The successful applicant is obliged to participate in the disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses of the ZEF Doctoral studies program which is scheduled October 2014-February 2015. During the analysis, simulation and writing-up period of the dissertation, the candidate will be based at ZEF in Bonn.
